U.S. Special Envoy for Yemen Tim Lenderking is traveling to Saudi Arabia and Oman on March 14 to continue intensive U.S. efforts to build on the UN-mediated truce that has brought nearly one year of calm to Yemen. This trip comes on the heels of President Biden’s March 7 phone call with Omani Sultan His Majesty Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, in which Yemen was a central topic. The truce and the ensuing period of calm enabled through U.S. diplomacy since 2021 have saved thousands of lives, brought tangible relief to millions of Yemenis, and created the best opportunity for peace Yemen has had in years. Special Envoy Lenderking will urge all parties to seize this opportunity to reach a new agreement and move towards an inclusive Yemeni-led political process, under UN auspices.
During this trip, the Special Envoy will also meet with UN and international partners to build support for ongoing peace efforts. He will encourage donors to give generously to address the world’s worst humanitarian crisis and help ensure peace efforts result in tangible benefits for Yemenis. He will also encourage support for the UN-led operation to offload oil from the decaying Safer tanker in order to prevent an environmental, humanitarian, and economic catastrophe in the Red Sea.
